15th Sept - Going for the Col du Tourmalet

The sun burned away yesterday's low cloud and we set off for the Col.  Many pretty villages built along the Pyrenees roads and quite different to those north of here.  Quite dour looking but fitting of the climate and harsh winters. It was fun to watch some determined cyclists arriving to the top.  We cheered a couple on and they were so proud to have made it!

A couple of men from the UK made it to the top and asked us to take their photos.  They left London yesterday by train and overnight travelled to Tarbes, then left there at 5:30 am to ride to the Col.  One oof them said his sister had just moved to Melbourne.

Caroline at the Col monument with a Tour rider going past.

A fine shot of the Pic-Du-Midi, a higher mountain only accessible by cable car from the Col.

with its own resident herd of cows, the ones below found some interest in the children's playground.

The little village of Campan had a huge variety of dolls displayed on many of the houses.
